OSRS Cave Horror Guide

Cave Horror Guide OSRS

Cave horrors are Slayer monsters found in the Mos Le'Harmless Cave. Killing them requires the completion of Cabin Fever, level 58 Slayer, a witchwood icon, and a light source (unless a fire of eternal light is lit). They are most often killed for their black mask drops along with a decent rate of hard clue scrolls.

The cave horrors have a special attack which always deals damage equal to 10% of the player's base Hitpoints level, rounded down (for example 9 damage at 96 Hitpoints). This attack can be completely nullified by either wearing a witchwood icon OR by having Protect from Melee activated. Using protection prayers allows players to use more powerful necklaces instead of the witchwood icon as it only provides minor bonuses. This special attack also has a strange effect of being an Area-of-Effect (AoE) attack in a single-way combat area, hitting any players stood next to the Cave horror not already in combat with it. Another strategy is to use safespots, but players should take caution leaving their safespot to loot, as the aggressive cave horrors may attack you. For this reason, if you do not have access to Protect from Melee, it is still recommended to bring the witchwood icon.

Location Cave Horror

To get there, players may do any of the following:

Use the free minigame teleport to Trouble Brewing in the Grouping tab, found in the chat-channel tab.

Drink some rum bought from Honest Jimmy for 20 pieces of eight.

Use the ectophial to travel to Port Phasmatys and then talk to Bill Teach to sail there.

Use the charter ship to sail there.

Teleport there using a Mos le'harmless teleport scroll, and then walk to the cave.

Harmony Island Teleport (requires Arceuus spellbook, completion of Great Brain Robbery) and talk to Brother Tranquility.

Slayer task

Cave horrors can be assigned as a slayer task starting at level 70 combat by Chaeldar, Nieve, and Duradel. Cave horrors are found exclusively in the Mos Le'Harmless Cave, requiring completion of Cabin Fever.

You must wear a Witchwood icon to fight them at melee distance, and if you don't, the cave horrors have a special attack which always deals damage equal to 10% of the player's base Hitpoints level, rounded down (e.g. 9 damage at 96). This can be completely mitigated by using Protect from Melee, or using a safespot.

A light source is also required to fight them without taking additional damage, unless a fire of eternal light is lit.

Cave horrors attack with Magic-based melee, meaning that Protect from Melee will negate the damage, but high magic defence will help when not praying. They have fairly low Hitpoints, and they are relatively spread apart, so it is generally best to use a fast-firing Ranged weapon like a toxic blowpipe, magic shortbow (i) or Karil's crossbow. If using Melee, it is recommended to use equipment that provides high Prayer bonus (such as Proselyte armour) and always use Protect from Melee so a better amulet can be used. A dwarf multicannon can also be used to speed up kills. Cave horrors can alternatively be safespotted by using the mushrooms, stalagmites, and boulders inside the cave, such as the area by the swamp near the cave entrance.

Additionally, if using melee, it is helpful to bring a way to cast Bones to Peaches (or the tablet version) as having good magic defence lets you out-heal their damage with the peaches. This can help save prayer potions and extend trips to the cave with extra healing.

Cave abomination

The cave abomination is a superior variant of the cave horror. When on task, it has a chance of spawning after purchasing the unlock "Bigger and Badder" for 150 Slayer reward points from any Slayer master.

In addition to 100% drops and tertiary drops, superior slayer monsters will always roll 3 additional items, of which only 1 roll may be from the superior unique table. The other rolls are performed on the regular counterpart's table; their displayed drop chances represent a single roll.

Gear set ups

Since Cave Horrors attack with a magical-based melee attack, you should always be wearing armour with high magic defense such as d’hide, Karils, and so forth.

Alternatively, you can also opt for prayer-boosting armor such as proselyte. When using this strategy, you do not need to use a Witchwood icon as your protect from melee will also negate their special attack.

Regular accounts will make good money on this task from seeds, natures, and the black mask drops.

Ironmen accounts will need to have at least one black mask to create their slayer helm and afterward, they should continue to do this task simply for the seed, herb, and nature rune drops.

Cave Horrors only have 55 HP making them a very quick kill and the task is also very quick and offers good experience rates.

With just Melee, you can expect to see up to 25k EXP per hour at Cave Horrors, depending on your gear and stats.

When using Piety as well, these numbers can go up to 30k exp per hour.
